IFAT Africa

Johanna Knapheide

Leading trade fair for environmental technologies on the African continent

IFAT Africa brought together experts, innovators, and decision-makers from across the continent – all united by a shared goal: shaping the future of sustainable environmental solutions.

Focus: AirStar evolution

At the heart of our appearance at IFAT Africa was the AirStar evolution – a high-performance windsifter that sets new standards in material separation. With its high throughput, low energy consumption, and precise separation of light and heavy fractions, it provides an ideal solution for modern recycling and waste management – especially under challenging conditions.
Being at IFAT Africa in person was something truly special. You often go to trade fairs expecting good conversations, but this one went deeper – it felt more like a shared journey than a standard industry event. From the very beginning, there was a noticeable openness – people weren’t just stopping by for a quick look, they came with real questions, with ideas, and often with specific challenges they were facing in their regions. We spoke with NGOs, university groups, start-ups and experienced operators alike – and everyone had a unique perspective on what circular economy could look like in Africa. What really stayed with me were the conversations with people working in manual sorting. Some of them shared concerns about the impact new technology might have on their jobs – and those conversations were incredibly honest. But instead of shying away from the topic, we took the time to explain, to listen, and to show how innovation can create new opportunities and not just replace old ones. It reminded me why it's so important to not just present a product, but to show up – to be present, listen, and engage on equal footing. That’s what builds trust, and that’s how real partnerships begin. Looking back, those moments of connection were probably the most valuable part of our entire trip.

Insights & Learning

IFAT Africa confirmed the enormous potential of circular economy models on the continent. Educational initiatives showed how essential it is to build awareness – both at the societal level and in practical implementation. We met companies that are already taking the next step, as well as individuals working in manual sorting who shared not only their experience but also their concerns about future job security. That’s why we believe it’s not enough to present technology – we must also communicate clearly, build trust, and develop inclusive solutions that truly fit the needs of local realities.

Why It Matters

This trade fair didn't just bring new contacts and exciting project leads – it confirmed that our expertise and our solutions are needed. The strong interest in our technology and the positive feedback showed that our commitment to combining innovation with responsibility is seen and valued. We return with fresh ideas, valuable insights, and a clear goal: to actively support this transformation and walk the path forward together.
